The powerline extender plugs into a power point and transmits data back to the router via another powerline extender that is connected directly to the router via an Ethernet cable. These are a bit dearer than the wifi extender and have slightly better performance however they tend to be quite small and do not generate a great amount of wifi signal resulting in the need for several units to create enough signal to fill the home. They also struggle when voltage fluctuates or home has 3 phase power. These devices also require initial programming by the user.
